Lying Glute

An advanced PNF stretching technique for the glutes performed with a partner, combining isometric contraction with passive stretching for improved flexibility.
Instructions
- Lie on your back with your legs extended flat on the floor and your partner kneeling beside you.
- Flex the hip of one leg, raising it off the floor while rotating so your foot moves over the opposite hip with the lower leg perpendicular to your body.
- Your partner should hold the knee and ankle in place, maintaining stability throughout the stretch.
- Attempt to push your leg toward your partner for 10-20 seconds while they resist the movement (isometric contraction phase).
- After the contraction, completely relax your muscles for 2-3 seconds.
- Your partner then gently pushes the ankle and knee toward your chest, deepening the stretch for 15-20 seconds.
- Continue this cycle for 2-3 repetitions if desired.
- Return to the starting position and repeat on the opposite leg.
Tips
- Communicate constantly with your partner about the intensity to prevent overstretching or injury.
- The isometric contraction phase activates the muscle before stretching, improving flexibility gains (PNF principle).
- Breathe steadily throughout; avoid holding your breath during contractions or stretches.
- Start with gentle resistance and stretches; gradually increase intensity as your flexibility improves.
- This technique should only be performed with a knowledgeable partner who understands proper form.
- Stop immediately if you feel sharp pain; gentle muscle tension is the goal, not pain.
Recommended starting values
