Soleus SMR
A self-myofascial release technique using a foam roller to apply pressure to the soleus muscle, improving mobility, reducing tightness, and enhancing recovery in the calf region.
Instructions
- Sit on the ground with your legs extended in front of you. Place a foam roller horizontally across your calf muscle, just below your knee, positioned on the soleus (lower calf muscle beneath the gastrocnemius).
- Place your hands behind you on the ground, supporting your upper body weight.
- Use your hands to lift your hips slightly off the ground, transferring pressure onto the foam roller.
- Slowly roll the foam roller down from just below the knee toward the ankle, pausing on any tight or tender areas.
- Spend additional time on particularly tight spots, allowing the pressure to help release the tension.
- Roll back up toward the knee and repeat the downward rolling motion.
- Continue rolling for the desired duration, typically 30-60 seconds per leg.
- Switch legs and repeat the process.
Tips
- Bent knees will emphasize the soleus more than straight legs, which emphasize the gastrocnemius.
- Spend extra time on particularly tender spots, but avoid excessive pain; mild discomfort is normal.
- SMR can be performed daily as a recovery and mobility tool, not just as part of structured training.
- Combine with stretching and active movement for comprehensive calf mobility work.
- This technique is particularly beneficial for athletes with tight calves or those doing high volumes of running or jumping.
- Proper breathing during SMR is important; avoid holding your breath and maintain steady, controlled breathing.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
| Goal | Sets | Hold |
