A self-massage technique using a foam roller to release tension in the iliotibial (IT) band along the outer thigh.
Instructions
- Lay on your side with the foam roller positioned under your outer thigh.
- Place the foam roller between your hip and knee.
- Position your bottom leg on the foam roller with your top leg crossed in front of you.
- Use your hands to support some of your body weight if needed.
- Roll along your outer thigh from hip to knee in slow, controlled motions.
- Pause for 10-30 seconds on any points of tension or tightness.
- Relax the muscles you’re stretching throughout the process.
- Repeat with the opposite leg for equal duration.
Tips
- This is one of the most tender areas for self-massage; go slowly.
- Relax the muscles of the leg being worked on.
- Apply steady, controlled pressure rather than aggressive rolling.
- Spend extra time on tight spots where you feel restriction.
- Perform 1-2 minutes per side for optimal results.
