An isolation exercise for neck strength and development, performed while lying face up with a weight plate for progressive resistance.
Instructions
- Lie face up on a flat bench with your whole body straight, positioning your shoulders slightly above the end of the bench so your neck and head hang slightly off.
- Hold a weight plate on top of your forehead, securing it with both hands at the sides.
- While keeping the plate secure, slowly lower your head back in a semi-circular motion as you breathe in, stretching the neck.
- Raise your head back up to the starting position in a semi-circular motion as you breathe out, contracting the neck muscles.
- Hold the contracted position at the top for a second.
- Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions.
- Control the movement throughout to prevent strain on the cervical spine.
- Remove the weight carefully and relax the neck muscles between sets.
Tips
- Start with a lighter weight plate until you develop adequate neck strength and control.
- Perform movements slowly and deliberately to minimize injury risk and maximize muscle engagement.
- Keep your torso flat on the bench throughout the movement for stability and safety.
- Do not jerk or bounce the weight; maintain smooth, controlled motions.
- If you experience pain (not just muscle fatigue), stop immediately and consult a healthcare professional.
- Consider pairing this exercise with neck stretches to maintain mobility and reduce tension.
