Pilates Rolling Like a Ball
A foundational Pilates exercise where you roll along your spine while in a tucked position, improving spinal mobility and core articulation.
Instructions
- Sit on the mat and bend your knees, bringing them toward your chest.
- Wrap your arms around your shins and bring your forehead toward your knees, creating a ball-like shape.
- Engage your core and gently rock backward, rolling along your spine from your tailbone toward your upper back.
- Rock forward, returning to the starting position using your abdominals to control the movement.
- Continue rolling back and forth in a smooth, controlled manner for the desired number of repetitions.
- Avoid rolling onto your neck; the motion should remain between your tailbone and upper back.
Tips
- This is a fundamental Pilates exercise that develops spinal articulation, core control, and massage of the spine.
- The rolling motion should be smooth and rhythmic, not jerky or bouncy.
- Your head remains tucked throughout; avoid rolling onto your neck.
- The movement comes from your core; your abdominals control both the backward and forward rolling motions.
- If the rolling motion is uncomfortable, reduce the range of motion or move more slowly.
- This exercise is excellent as a warm-up or cool-down in a Pilates sequence.
- Coordinate your breathing with the movement: exhale as you rock back, inhale as you rock forward.
- The massage effect of rolling along your spine can help improve spinal mobility and reduce tension.
