Reverse Calf Raises (Smith Machine)Reverse Calf Raises (Smith Machine)

An isolation exercise targeting the tibialis anterior and front of the shins by raising the toes while the heels remain planted, performed on a smith machine with added weight.

Instructions

  1. Adjust the barbell on the smith machine to fit your height and align a raised platform right under the bar.
  2. Stand on the platform with the heels of your feet secured on top of it with the balls of your feet extending off it. Position your toes facing forward with a shoulder width stance.
  3. Place your shoulders under the barbell while maintaining the foot positioning and push the barbell up by extending your hips and knees until your torso is standing erect. The knees should be kept with a slight bend; never locked. This will be your starting position. The barbell on your back is only for balance purposes.
  4. Raise the balls of your feet as you breathe out by extending your toes as high as possible and flexing your tibialis anterior. Ensure that the heel is kept stationary at all times. Hold the contracted position for a second before you start to go back down.
  5. Slowly go back down to the starting position as you breathe in by lowering the balls of your feet and toes.
  6. Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions.

Tips

  • This exercise is performed in reverse compared to standard calf raises, emphasizing the front of the shins rather than the calves.
  • Use controlled movements to maximize the stretch and contraction in the tibialis anterior muscle.
  • The bar is only for balance; avoid placing excessive weight on your shoulders.
  • Perform higher reps for this exercise since the tibialis anterior is not designed to handle extremely heavy loads.
  • This exercise can help balance out calf-dominant leg training by working the opposing shin muscles.
  • Consider performing this exercise at the end of your leg workout to avoid fatigue in this smaller muscle group affecting other exercises.
