Ankle Dorsiflexion (Band)
An isolation exercise for the tibialis anterior using a resistance band, performed by flexing the foot upward against resistance.
Instructions
- Sit on the ground or a bench with one leg extended.
- Loop a resistance band around your forefoot just above the toes.
- Hold both ends of the band in your hands with the band creating tension.
- Keep your heel on the ground as the pivot point.
- Pull your toes upward toward your shin against the band resistance.
- Hold the top position briefly, squeezing the tibialis anterior muscle.
- Lower your toes back down with control to the starting position.
- Complete all repetitions on one leg before switching to the other leg.
Tips
- This exercise targets the often-neglected tibialis anterior, important for ankle health.
- Move slowly and deliberately to maximize muscle engagement and control.
- The tibialis anterior is critical for dorsiflexion and prevents foot drop.
- Perform this exercise regularly to improve ankle stability and prevent shin splints.
- Perform 2-3 sets of 12-15 reps per leg for balanced ankle development.
- Lighter resistance with higher reps is appropriate for this isolation exercise.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
