Secondary Muscles
A flexibility exercise using a stability ball to stretch the hamstrings and lower back through a seated forward fold position.
Instructions
- Sit on the floor with legs extended and the stability ball under one knee
- Keep the other leg straight on the ground
- Hinge forward from your hips, maintaining a neutral spine
- Allow the stretch to develop naturally as you fold forward
- Hold the stretched position without bouncing
- Return to starting position and switch legs
- Repeat on both sides for desired duration
Tips
- Keep your chest relatively upright to prevent excessive lumbar strain
- Feel the stretch along the back of the leg without sharp pain
- Use the ball to support and control the intensity of the stretch
- Breathe deeply and relax into the stretch rather than forcing it
- Maintain the stretch for 20-30 seconds per leg
- Avoid bouncing or jerky movements that could cause injury
- Flexibility improves with consistent, gentle stretching over time
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
