Standing Leg CurlStanding Leg Curl

A standing hamstring isolation exercise performed on a machine, targeting the hamstrings through knee flexion while maintaining a forward torso lean.

Instructions

  1. Adjust the machine lever to fit your height appropriately. Stand facing forward with your torso bent at the waist at approximately 30-45 degrees—an angled position favors better hamstring recruitment than an upright position.
  2. Place the pad of the lever on the back of your right leg just a few inches below your calf. Position the front of your right leg on top of the machine pad, with your foot resting on the floor pad.
  3. Grab the side handles of the machine for balance and stability. Position your toes pointing forward. Keep your torso bent and your leg fully extended. This is the starting position.
  4. Exhale as you curl your right leg upward, flexing your hamstring and bringing your heel toward your glutes as far as possible without lifting your upper leg off the pad.
  5. Hold the top position briefly, feeling the contraction in your hamstring.
  6. Inhale as you slowly lower your leg back to the starting position, maintaining control throughout the descent.
  7. Complete all reps on your right leg, then switch and perform the same movement with your left leg.

Tips

  • The forward torso lean is critical—it ensures the hamstrings are the primary movers rather than the glutes.
  • Keep your upper leg pressed against the pad throughout to isolate the hamstrings properly.
  • Move with a controlled tempo, especially on the descent, to maximize muscle engagement.
  • Avoid using momentum or jerking the weight; smooth, deliberate movement is more effective.
  • Your feet should remain on the machine pad for stability and to prevent swinging.
  • This exercise is particularly effective for developing hamstring definition and strength without placing excessive stress on the lower back.

Recommended starting values
