Glute isolation exercise performed with cable using a leg kickback motion to target the glutes.

Instructions

  1. Attach an ankle cuff to the cable machine and adjust it to the lowest setting.
  2. Fasten the ankle cuff around one foot and stand upright facing the machine, holding on to a support for balance.
  3. Keep your working leg extended behind you with a slight bend in your knee.
  4. Drive your leg straight back and upward using your glute muscles, extending your hip fully.
  5. Squeeze your glute at the end of the movement.
  6. Slowly return your leg to the starting position with control.
  7. Complete all reps on one leg, then switch to the other leg.

Tips

  • Focus on pressing through your heel as you drive backward
  • Avoid leaning forward or using momentum to lift the weight
  • Keep your torso upright and core engaged throughout the movement
  • You should feel the glutes contracting, not the lower back
  • For increased mind-muscle connection, pause at the top and squeeze the glute

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
