Iron Crosses (Stretch)Iron Crosses (Stretch)

A dynamic stretching exercise performed face-down that targets the quadriceps and hip flexors through alternating cross-body leg movements.

Instructions

  1. Lie face down on an exercise mat with your arms extended out to your sides, palms pressed to the floor.
  2. Rest your forehead on the mat or turn your head to one side for comfort; this is the starting position.
  3. Flex one knee and bring that leg across your body, attempting to touch your foot toward the ground near your opposite hand.
  4. You should feel a stretch along the front of the thigh and across the hip of the leg being stretched.
  5. Return the leg to the starting position with control.
  6. Immediately flex the opposite knee and bring that leg across your body to the other side.
  7. Continue alternating sides in a smooth, flowing movement.
  8. Complete 10-20 total repetitions, alternating sides.

Tips

  • Perform this stretch dynamically with controlled movements rather than holding each position.
  • Keep your hips as level as possible throughout the movement to maximize the stretch.
  • The stretch should feel comfortable; avoid forcing excessive range of motion that causes pain.
  • This exercise serves as both a warm-up and cool-down movement, increasing mobility and blood flow.
  • For a deeper stretch, slow down and hold each position for 2-3 seconds.
  • Breathing remains steady throughout the movement; never hold your breath.

Recommended starting values
