A stretching exercise targeting the IT band and glutes performed lying down with assistance from a belt or band for deeper range of motion.
Instructions
- Lie on your back on an exercise mat with both legs extended.
- Loop a belt, rope, or resistance band around one foot and grasp both ends.
- Swing the banded leg across your body to the opposite side, keeping the leg relatively extended.
- Position your leg so that it crosses diagonally across your body while your hips remain flat against the floor.
- Use the belt to gently pull your leg further across your body, increasing the stretch in your IT band and glutes.
- Keep your foot elevated off the floor throughout the stretch.
- Hold this stretched position, breathing deeply and relaxing into the stretch.
- Gently release the tension and lower your leg back to the starting position.
- Rest briefly, then repeat on the opposite side.
Tips
- Hold the stretch for 20-30 seconds on each side; never force the stretch beyond comfortable tension.
- Breathe steadily throughout the stretch and never hold your breath.
- Keep your back flat against the floor to prevent excessive lumbar spine movement.
- A belt or band allows for a deeper, more controlled stretch than using your hands alone.
- Perform this stretch after a workout when your muscles are warm and pliable.
- The IT band is a fascia structure that benefits from consistent, patient stretching over time.
- Avoid bouncing or jerky movements, which can cause injury.
