Lying Rotator Cuff Exercise
An intermediate isolation exercise for rotator cuff strengthening performed lying on your side, targeting the infraspinatus and teres minor muscles.
Instructions
- Lie on your side on a mat or bench with your knees slightly bent for stability.
- Keep your lower arm underneath you for support, or rest it on the mat in front of your torso.
- Bend your upper arm elbow to 90 degrees, keeping your elbow against your waist and ribcage throughout the movement.
- Hold a light dumbbell in your upper hand with your forearm pointing toward the floor; this is your starting position.
- Slowly rotate your forearm upward toward your stomach, rotating at the shoulder joint (external rotation).
- Continue the rotation until your forearm reaches approximately a 45-90 degree angle from your starting position.
- Squeeze your rotator cuff muscles at the top of the movement for a second.
- Slowly lower the dumbbell back down to the starting position in a controlled manner.
- Complete all repetitions on one side before switching to the opposite side.
- Progress slowly; add weight only when you can perform all reps with perfect control.
Tips
- Start with very light weight; the rotator cuff muscles are small and vulnerable to injury from excessive loading.
- Keep your elbow firmly against your waist; do not allow it to move away from your body during the movement.
- Move slowly and deliberately; smooth, controlled motions are essential for rotator cuff health and development.
- This exercise is therapeutic for shoulder health and helps prevent injuries in the rotator cuff.
- Perform this exercise 2-3 times per week as part of a comprehensive shoulder training program.
- If you experience pain (not just muscle fatigue), stop immediately and consult a healthcare professional.
