Peroneals StretchPeroneals Stretch

A seated stretch for the peroneal muscles (fibularis) on the lateral lower leg, performed with a band or strap to invert the foot.

Instructions

  1. Sit on the ground or a mat with your legs extended in front of you.
  2. Loop a belt, rope, or resistance band around one foot.
  3. With the leg extended and the heel off of the ground, pull on the belt so that the foot is inverted, bringing the sole of the foot inward and the inside of the foot toward your body.
  4. Hold this stretched position for 10-20 seconds.
  5. Release and repeat on the other leg.
  6. Perform 2-3 sets per leg.

Tips

  • This stretch targets the peroneal muscles on the outside of the lower leg, which can become tight from running or sports requiring lateral movement.
  • Pull the foot inward gently; this should be a mild to moderate stretch without sharp pain.
  • Keep your leg relatively straight; avoid bending the knee too much, as this reduces the stretch intensity on the peroneus.
  • Hold the stretch for at least 15-20 seconds to allow the muscle fibers to lengthen and relax.
  • Perform this stretch daily, especially if you have ankle instability issues or tight peroneals.
  • You can use a yoga strap, resistance band, or even a towel if you don’t have a belt available.

Recommended starting values
