Pilates Swimming
A prone dynamic exercise mimicking swimming motions to strengthen the back and core while improving stability.
Instructions
- Lie face-down on the mat with your arms extended overhead and your legs extended behind you.
- Press your forehead lightly on the mat or look slightly downward to maintain neck alignment.
- Engage your core and press your pelvis into the mat.
- Inhale to prepare.
- Exhale and begin alternately lifting your right arm and left leg slightly off the mat while maintaining core engagement.
- Quickly alternate, lifting the left arm and right leg as you lower the first pair.
- Continue this alternating pattern in a smooth, rhythmic motion, similar to the flutter kick in swimming.
- Maintain control and avoid twisting your torso; movement should come from your limbs, not rotation.
- Continue for the prescribed time or number of alternations.
Tips
- Keep your core and glutes engaged throughout to stabilize your pelvis.
- Lift your limbs only slightly off the mat; the movement is controlled, not explosive.
- Maintain a steady, rhythmic tempo that allows you to sustain proper form.
- Keep your neck neutral by resting your forehead lightly on the mat.
- Avoid excessive spinal extension; focus on stability rather than large movements.
- Breathe steadily throughout; a rhythmic breathing pattern can help maintain tempo.
- This exercise builds endurance and stability in addition to strength.
