Runner's Stretch

A dynamic stretching movement that targets the hamstrings, glutes, and hip flexors through a lunging position. This stretch is commonly used by runners to improve hip and leg flexibility.
Instructions
- Start standing upright and step one leg forward into a lunge position.
- Lower your back knee down toward the floor until your front knee is bent at approximately 90 degrees.
- Ensure your front heel stays on the floor throughout the stretch.
- Place your hands on either side of your front leg for support.
- To stretch the hamstring of the front leg, gradually push your buttocks up toward the ceiling.
- Then slowly lower your buttocks back down toward the floor to stretch the hip flexor of the back leg.
- Breathe slowly and hold each position for 15-30 seconds.
- Switch legs and repeat on the opposite side.
Tips
- This stretch targets both the hip flexor of the back leg and the hamstring/glutes of the front leg.
- If your front heel lifts off the ground, scoot your back leg further away to allow the heel to rest.
- Perform this stretch after running when muscles are warm and pliable.
- Increase the depth of the stretch gradually as your flexibility improves.
- This is an excellent warm-up stretch for runners before workouts.
- Hold each position gently without bouncing to avoid muscle strain.
- Flexibility improvements take time and consistent practice.
