Standing Hamstring Stretch
A fundamental static stretching exercise targeting the hamstring muscles by extending one leg forward and folding at the hips while maintaining a neutral spine.
Instructions
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Step your right leg forward about 12-18 inches, placing your heel on the ground with your toes pointing upward.
- Keep your back leg straight (or with a very slight knee bend) and maintain an upright torso.
- Bend forward at the hips, keeping your back relatively straight rather than rounding through your spine.
- Allow your arms to hang down or place your hands on your thighs for support as you lean forward.
- Lean forward gradually until you feel a comfortable stretch across the hamstring of your front leg.
- Hold this position for 20-30 seconds while breathing steadily.
- Return to standing and switch sides, repeating the stretch with your left leg forward.
Tips
- Bend from the hips rather than rounding your spine; this protects your lower back and ensures proper hamstring engagement.
- Keep your front leg’s heel planted on the ground throughout the stretch for maximum effectiveness.
- A slight knee bend in your back leg can help reduce strain on your lower back if you’re tight.
- Move gradually into the stretch and avoid bouncing, which can activate protective muscle responses.
- This stretch is most effective when performed on muscles that are warm, such as after a workout.
- For increased flexibility, perform this stretch multiple times throughout the day, holding for longer durations.
