An isolation exercise using a wrist roller apparatus where the forearms roll a rope to lift a weight, strengthening the wrist extensors and forearm musculature.
Instructions
- Stand upright and grip a wrist roller using a pronated grip (palms facing down) with feet at shoulder-width apart.
- Slowly lift both arms until they are fully extended and parallel to the floor in front of you.
- Ensure the rope is not pre-wrapped around the roller; it should extend fully with the weight at the bottom.
- Your entire body should remain stationary except for your forearm movement.
- Rotate one wrist at a time in an upward motion to roll the rope around the roller, bringing the weight up toward the bar.
- Once the weight has reached the bar, slowly reverse the motion by rotating the wrist downward to lower the weight back down.
- Complete all repetitions for one direction, then repeat rolling in the opposite direction.
Tips
- This exercise is highly specific for forearm and wrist strength development.
- Start with lighter weights and build up progressively to avoid wrist strain.
- Control the movement on both the lifting and lowering phases.
- The unilateral nature of this exercise addresses strength imbalances between forearms.
- This exercise is excellent for improving grip strength and wrist stability.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
