Primary Muscles

A jump rope variation where you alternate jumping on each foot in a running motion, building cardiovascular fitness and lower body endurance.

Instructions

  1. Select an appropriate jump rope for your height, with the rope reaching approximately to your shoulders.
  2. Find a clear, flat surface with sufficient overhead clearance and space for jumping.
  3. Hold the rope handles at waist height with your elbows bent at approximately 90 degrees.
  4. Keep your hands slightly wider than hip-width apart, close to your body.
  5. Begin rotating the rope by making small circles with your wrists and forearms.
  6. Time your first jump and pass the rope over your head and under your feet.
  7. As the rope comes around again, jump off your right foot while lifting your left knee up.
  8. Land lightly on your right foot and immediately prepare for the next rotation.
  9. On the next rope rotation, jump off your left foot while lifting your right knee.
  10. Continue alternating feet in a running or jogging pattern with each rope rotation.
  11. Maintain a steady rhythm and consistent pace throughout the exercise.
  12. Jump for your target duration or number of repetitions.

Tips

  • This variation more closely mimics running, engaging muscles in a pattern similar to actual running.
  • Start at a slow pace with high knees to establish the rhythm before increasing speed.
  • Maintain an upright posture with shoulders relaxed and core engaged.
  • Land on the balls of your feet with soft, bent knees to absorb impact effectively.
  • This variation is slightly more challenging than both-feet-together rope jumping.
  • Alternating feet provides excellent aerobic conditioning and lower body endurance.
  • Keep your arms relatively stationary; the power comes primarily from your wrists and legs.
