An explosive plyometric exercise where the athlete jumps forward as far as possible from a standing position, developing lower body power and horizontal distance production.

Instructions

  1. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, positioned in front of an area with sufficient space for horizontal distance.
  2. Bend your knees slightly and swing your arms back in preparation for the jump.
  3. Explosively drive through your feet, extending your hips, knees, and ankles while simultaneously swinging your arms forward and upward.
  4. Launch yourself forward, maximizing both horizontal distance and the length of your flight phase.
  5. As you land, touch down with your toes first, then roll through to your heels, bending your knees to absorb impact.
  6. Attempt to land as far forward as possible on both feet, stabilizing your position.
  7. Mark your landing distance and rest before attempting the next repetition.

Tips

  • Maximize the explosion off the ground by extending through all lower body joints simultaneously.
  • Arm swing contributes significantly to distance; use a dynamic, coordinated arm motion.
  • Land with your weight distributed through your entire foot, not just your toes.
  • Avoid excessive backward lean in flight; this reduces the distance traveled.
  • This exercise demands significant explosive power; ensure adequate recovery between repetitions.
  • Can be tracked by both reps and distance for comprehensive measurement of explosive power output.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
