A self-myofascial release technique using a foam roller on the calves to release fascial restrictions and improve mobility.
Instructions
- Sit on the floor with your legs extended in front of you.
- Place a foam roller underneath one lower leg, positioned between your knee and ankle.
- Position your other leg either crossed over the opposite leg or planted on the floor to support some of your weight.
- Place your hands behind you on the floor for support and to control your body weight.
- Press down with your hands to raise your hips off the floor, shifting most of your weight onto the foam roller against your calf.
- Slowly roll from below the knee down to above the ankle, applying pressure throughout the movement.
- When you find areas of tension or tenderness, pause for 10-30 seconds and apply sustained pressure.
- Complete the rolling for one leg, then switch to the opposite leg and repeat.
Tips
- Adjust your body weight by using your hands to increase or decrease pressure
- Roll slowly and deliberately, not quickly bouncing over the muscle
- Breathe deeply and relax into the areas of tension
- Spend extra time on particularly tight or tender spots
- This technique helps release fascial restrictions and improve calf flexibility
- Perform this after workouts when muscles are warm and pliable
- You can increase intensity by using a harder foam roller or double-layer rolling
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
