Chest and lat isolation exercise using a dumbbell performed in a half-lying position across a bench, providing a unique stretch and contraction.

Instructions

  1. Grasp a moderately weighted dumbbell with both hands, palms flat against the underside of the top plates and thumbs around the bar.
  2. Lie on your back across a flat bench so only your upper back and shoulders are in contact with the bench. Your feet should be set about shoulder-width apart and your head should hang slightly downward.
  3. With the dumbbell supported at arm’s length directly above your chest, bend your arms about 15 degrees and keep them bent throughout the movement. This is your starting position.
  4. Slowly lower the dumbbell backward and downward in a semicircular arc to as low a position as is comfortably possible. Feel the stretch in your chest.
  5. Raise the dumbbell slowly back along the same arc to the starting point.
  6. Repeat for the required number of repetitions.

Tips

  • The 15-degree bend in your elbows should remain constant throughout the entire movement.
  • Move through a controlled arc; avoid jerky or explosive movements.
  • Focus on stretching the chest at the bottom of the movement before pulling back up.
  • This exercise provides a unique stretch and contraction for chest development.
  • Keep your core engaged to prevent excessive arching of your lower back.
  • This movement is excellent for improving chest mobility and targeting the pectorals.
  • Use a moderate weight and focus on form over heavy loading.

Recommended starting values
