Primary Muscles

An advanced jump rope technique where you cross the rope handles in front of your body mid-jump, requiring coordination and timing skills.

Instructions

  1. Select an appropriate jump rope for your height, with the rope reaching approximately to your shoulders.
  2. Find a clear, flat surface with sufficient overhead clearance and space for jumping safely.
  3. Hold the rope handles at waist height with your elbows bent at approximately 90 degrees.
  4. Keep your hands slightly wider than hip-width apart, close to your body.
  5. Begin with a standard jump rope motion, rotating the rope overhead and jumping over it.
  6. After 1-2 standard jumps to establish rhythm, prepare to execute a crossover.
  7. As the rope comes around and approaches the front of your body, quickly cross your arms.
  8. Cross your right hand over your left hand (or vice versa) before the rope passes under your feet.
  9. Jump through the crossed rope opening at the center of your body.
  10. Immediately uncross your arms and return to the standard rope rotation.
  11. Continue with 1-2 standard jumps before executing the next crossover.
  12. Alternate between standard jumps and crossovers in a rhythmic pattern.

Tips

  • Crossovers require significant coordination; practice the timing carefully before attempting at higher speeds.
  • Start with slow, deliberate movements to master the timing of the arm crossing.
  • Keep the rope rotation consistent throughout; timing is critical for successful execution.
  • Maintain upright posture with shoulders relaxed and core engaged.
  • Land on the balls of your feet with soft, bent knees to absorb impact.
  • As comfort improves, you can perform consecutive crossovers or increase the overall pace.
  • Crossovers add technical challenge and complexity to standard rope jumping, improving coordination.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
