Secondary Muscles
A deadlift variation performed on the Smith machine, where the barbell moves in a fixed vertical path, reducing stabilization demands while building lower body and posterior chain strength.
Instructions
- Load the bar to an appropriate weight on the Smith machine, positioned at approximately mid-shin height.
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, positioning yourself so the bar aligns with the middle of your feet.
- Bend at the hips and knees to grip the bar with a shoulder-width, pronated (overhand) grip or mixed grip.
- Keep your back straight with a neutral spine, chest up, and shoulders slightly in front of the bar.
- Unlock the bar from the safety catches and take a deep breath.
- Drive through your heels while extending your hips and knees simultaneously, maintaining a straight back throughout.
- Continue until you reach full standing position with hips and knees fully extended.
- Slowly reverse the movement by hinging at the hips and bending the knees, returning the bar to the floor with control.
Tips
- Maintain a neutral spine throughout the entire movement; never round your lower back.
- Keep the bar close to your body as you lift to minimize strain on your lower back.
- Drive with your legs first, then extend your hips at the top.
- Keep your core braced throughout the entire lift for stability.
- Do not allow your shoulders to drift too far in front of the bar at the starting position.
- The Smith machine reduces stabilization demands, making it suitable for higher reps compared to barbell deadlifts.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
