calisthenics Primary Muscles
An advanced isometric hold where the body is suspended from a bar with the legs extended horizontally parallel to the ground, creating an "L" shape and intensely challenging the core.
Instructions
- Hang from a pull-up bar with both arms fully extended, shoulder-width apart.
- Engage your core and hip flexors to raise your legs up until they are parallel to the ground, creating a 90-degree angle at your hips.
- Keep your legs straight and together, maintaining the horizontal position throughout the hold.
- Maintain tension in your core and shoulders, keeping your arms straight and shoulders engaged.
- Hold this position for as long as possible while maintaining proper form.
- Lower your legs in a controlled manner and rest before attempting the next set.
Tips
- Start with bent knees and progress to straight legs as your strength improves
- Focus on keeping your legs parallel to the ground rather than allowing them to drop
- Engage your core muscles actively to prevent sagging or swinging
- Build time gradually—start with shorter holds and increase duration over weeks
- Maintain tight shoulders and a strong grip to support the hold
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
