Secondary Muscles
An advanced static hold where the body forms an L shape with straight legs extended, requiring intense core and hip flexor strength.
Instructions
- Place two parallettes on the ground positioned slightly wider than shoulder-width.
- Sit between the parallettes and place your hands on each one with fingers pointing forward.
- Press through your hands to lift your entire body off the ground.
- Keep your arms straight with your shoulders packed and shoulders shrugged slightly.
- Extend your legs completely straight out in front of you, holding them at hip height.
- Your body should form an L shape, with your torso perpendicular to your extended legs.
- Hold this position for time, maintaining strict form with straight arms and extended legs.
- Lower yourself back down when you have completed your set.
Tips
- This is an advanced movement - master basic dips and handstands before attempting L-sits.
- Keep your legs as straight as possible; bent knees reduce the difficulty but also the effectiveness.
- The greater the depression in your shoulders, the easier the hold becomes - focus on shoulder strength.
- Build up gradually by starting with tuck-L holds where your knees are bent.
- Breathe steadily throughout the hold - do not hold your breath.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
