Lateral Step Up
A unilateral lower body exercise where you step up onto a bench from the side to strengthen leg muscles and single-leg stability.
Instructions
- Stand sideways next to a step or bench, feet hip-width apart.
- Position the bench to your side at approximately mid-shin height.
- Step up onto the bench with your inside leg, pushing through the heel.
- Extend your hip and knee to bring your entire body up to stand on the bench.
- Your outside leg can lightly touch the bench at the top for balance.
- Reverse the movement by stepping down with the outside leg first.
- Lower yourself back to the starting position with control.
- Complete all repetitions on one side, then switch sides and repeat.
Tips
- Keep your torso upright and avoid leaning forward.
- Drive through your heel to stand on the bench, not your toes.
- Move slowly and deliberately to maximize leg muscle engagement.
- For added difficulty, hold dumbbells or increase the bench height.
- Ensure the bench is sturdy and stable before performing the exercise.
- Maintain proper alignment of your knees over your toes.
