Leg Extension (Cable)
An isolation exercise that targets the quadriceps by extending the leg against cable resistance.
Instructions
- Set the cable pulley to the lowest position and attach a single cuff attachment or ankle strap.
- Stand facing away from the cable machine, securing the cuff around your ankle.
- Hold onto a stable structure for balance, keeping your torso upright.
- With a slight bend in your knee, extend your leg forward against the cable resistance.
- Pause briefly at full extension, squeezing your quadriceps.
- Return to the starting position in a controlled manner without fully relaxing the tension.
Tips
- Maintain an upright posture and avoid leaning backward; keep your torso stable.
- Ensure the cuff is positioned securely above your ankle for safety.
- Extend your leg fully but avoid locking out your knee at the end of the movement.
- Control the eccentric portion to maximize quadriceps engagement.
- Use a weight that allows for full range of motion with proper form.
- Perform equal repetitions on both sides for balanced leg development.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
