Lying Hip Abduction
A beginner-friendly isolation exercise for the hip abductors and outer glutes, performed lying on your side without equipment.
Instructions
- Lie on your side on a mat with your body in a straight line from head to feet.
- Rest your head on your lower arm or hand, and place your upper hand in front of your chest for stability.
- Keep your lower leg bent slightly or extended, depending on your comfort and stability.
- Your upper leg should be straight and aligned with your body.
- Slowly raise your upper leg up and away from your body, leading with your heel and keeping the leg straight.
- Continue the movement until you reach the highest point where your leg is roughly 45 degrees from your body.
- Hold the top position for a second, squeezing the abductor muscles.
- Slowly lower your leg back to the starting position in a controlled manner.
- Complete all repetitions on one side before switching to the other side.
Tips
- Keep your torso stable and avoid rolling backward during the movement; maintain proper side-lying position.
- Move slowly and deliberately; fast, jerky movements reduce muscle engagement and increase injury risk.
- To increase difficulty, add ankle weights or resistance bands around your thighs once you master the bodyweight version.
- Keep your core engaged to prevent swaying and to protect your lower back throughout the exercise.
- Point your toe slightly forward to optimize abductor activation and reduce strain on your hip joint.
- Perform this exercise 2-3 times per week for optimal hip stability and strength development.
