Hip Abduction (TRX / Suspension Trainer)
An isolation exercise targeting the gluteus medius and hip abductors using suspension trainer support. Excellent for hip stability and glute activation.
Instructions
- Stand facing the TRX anchor point holding the handles with both hands at chest height
- Shift your weight onto one leg, keeping a slight bend in the supporting knee
- Lift the opposite leg out to the side while maintaining an upright torso
- Drive the leg out to about hip height or slightly higher
- Hold briefly at the top, feeling the glute contraction
- Slowly lower the leg back to the starting position under control
- Complete all reps on one side before switching legs
- Maintain core tension and avoid leaning away from the working leg
Tips
- Keep your torso upright and avoid leaning sideways
- The movement should be controlled; avoid swinging or using momentum
- Maintain a slight forward lean from your hips if needed for balance
- Increase difficulty by reducing hand support or moving further from the anchor point
- Feel the contraction in your glute medius, not your hip flexor
- Perform all reps on one side, then switch to maintain balanced strength
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
