Overhead Carry (Barbell)
A loaded carry exercise with the barbell held overhead that develops shoulder stability, core strength, and work capacity through isometric loading.
Instructions
- Start in a standing position with the barbell resting on a rack at shoulder height.
- Press the barbell overhead to arm’s length.
- Stabilize the barbell with a firm grip and engaged shoulder muscles.
- Keep your core tight and maintain an upright posture.
- Walk forward for the prescribed distance or duration while maintaining the overhead position.
- Keep the barbell stable and avoid excessive sway or movement.
- Return to the rack and lower the barbell under control to the starting position.
Tips
- This is a core and shoulder stability exercise, not a leg exercise.
- Start with a lighter weight to master the shoulder stability demands before increasing load.
- Maintain an upright posture and avoid leaning back or to the sides.
- Engage your entire core to support and stabilize the overhead load.
- This exercise improves shoulder health and work capacity over time.
- Vary the distance or duration based on your fitness level and training goals.
Recommended starting values
