Pilates Control Balance
An advanced Pilates mat exercise that develops core strength, balance, and coordination through controlled leg movements while balancing on the upper back.
Instructions
- Lie on your back with your legs extended and your arms at your sides with palms facing down.
- Engage your core and lift your head, neck, and shoulders off the mat, rolling up through your spine.
- Support your back with your hands (elbows bent) and lift your legs off the ground.
- Bring one leg forward and down while extending the other leg back and up, maintaining balance on your upper back.
- Switch legs in a controlled, alternating pattern, creating a scissors-like motion.
- Continue for the desired number of repetitions, maintaining stability throughout.
Tips
- This exercise is advanced and requires significant core strength and balance; practice foundational Pilates exercises first.
- Keep your upper back firmly supported with your hands throughout the movement for safety.
- Move with control and precision; this is about quality of movement, not speed.
- Your core should be engaged constantly to stabilize your body as you move your legs.
- Coordinate your breathing with the movement; exhale as you switch legs.
- If balance is difficult, keep your legs bent at the knees to reduce leverage and increase stability.
- This exercise develops exceptional core control and can improve balance throughout your entire body.
