Pilates Corkscrew
An advanced Pilates mat exercise combining spinal extension and rotation to develop core strength, oblique activation, and rotational control.
Instructions
- Lie on your back with your legs extended and together.
- Place your arms at your sides with palms facing down.
- Engage your core and lift your legs off the ground to a 90-degree angle at the hips.
- Roll your hips up off the mat, supporting your back with your hands.
- Slowly lower your legs in a corkscrew-like spiral motion to one side.
- Complete the spiral by bringing your legs down and across your body, creating a rotational pattern.
- Return to the center and lift your legs back to the starting position.
- Repeat the spiral in the opposite direction.
Tips
- This is an advanced Pilates exercise requiring substantial core strength and spinal control.
- Move slowly and deliberately through the corkscrew pattern to maintain control and engagement.
- Your core must remain engaged throughout to protect your spine during the rotational movement.
- The movement should be smooth and spiral-like, not jerky or rushed.
- Focus on moving through your entire spine, including the thoracic and lumbar regions.
- If this exercise is too challenging, practice simpler rotation and spinal extension exercises first.
- The obliques will be significantly activated during the lateral and rotational portions of this movement.
