Pilates Rocking
A Pilates core exercise performed in a seated V-position with rocking motions, developing core stability, balance, and hip flexor strength.
Instructions
- Sit on the mat with your knees bent and your hands gripping your shins or ankles.
- Engage your core and lift your feet off the ground, creating a V-shape with your body.
- Rock your body backward, allowing your upper back to come close to the mat but not touching down.
- Rock forward, returning to the starting V-position.
- Continue rocking back and forth in a smooth, controlled manner for the desired number of repetitions.
Tips
- This exercise develops exceptional core stability and control while challenging your balance.
- Your core should be engaged constantly; this is what prevents you from rolling backwards.
- The rocking motion should be smooth and controlled, not jerky or bouncy.
- Keep your grip on your shins firm but your shoulders relaxed.
- Your chest should remain lifted throughout the rocking motion.
- If the full rocking motion is too challenging, reduce the range of motion or keep your feet on the ground.
- This exercise is excellent for developing the deep abdominal stabilizers that support spinal health.
- Coordinate your breathing with the movement: exhale as you rock back, inhale as you rock forward.
- The rocking motion should be rhythmic and meditative, not rushed.
