Plate PinchPlate Pinch

A grip strength exercise where two weight plates are held together using finger and thumb pressure, developing forearm and forearms strength.

Instructions

  1. Grab two weight plates and position them together with the smooth (non-bumper) sides facing outward.
  2. Use your fingers on one side and your thumb on the opposite side to grip and pinch both plates together.
  3. The plates should be held securely with sufficient pressure to prevent them from separating.
  4. Stand upright with your arms at your sides or held at waist height, maintaining the pinch grip on the plates.
  5. Squeeze the plates with maximum pressure and hold this isometric contraction for as long as possible.
  6. Focus on maintaining constant pressure throughout the hold.
  7. Release the plates and rest before repeating.
  8. Perform the prescribed number of sets and duration for each hand.

Tips

  • This is primarily an isometric grip strength exercise that challenges the forearm muscles intensely.
  • The wider the plate rims, the more challenging the grip.
  • Use matching weight plates to ensure balanced grip development on both sides.
  • Perform this exercise 2-3 times per week for optimal grip strength development.
  • This exercise is particularly valuable for strength athletes and martial artists.
  • Breathe steadily during the hold; avoid holding your breath.
  • Combine with other grip training methods for comprehensive forearm development.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
