A static hold on rings with a false grip position where the hands wrap around the rings, building wrist and forearm strength necessary for advanced ring movements.

Instructions

  1. Adjust rings to approximately chest height with rings adjusted so you can grab them.
  2. Grip each ring with a false grip by wrapping your hands around the rings with your palms facing downward and inward.
  3. Press your wrists downward against the rings, creating tension in your forearms and wrists.
  4. Engage your chest and shoulders, maintaining stable positioning.
  5. Hold this position while maintaining constant pressure and tension.
  6. Breathe steadily and maintain the hold for the prescribed duration.
  7. Release the grip and return to standing position.

Tips

  • The false grip requires wrist strength and places significant demand on forearms
  • This is a preparatory exercise for muscle-ups and more advanced ring skills
  • Start with shorter holds (10-20 seconds) and progress to longer durations
  • Your shoulders must remain engaged and packed for stability
  • This grip position is uncomfortable initially; gradually build tolerance over time
  • Perform 2-3 times per week with adequate recovery between sessions
  • Combine this with other wrist and forearm strengthening exercises
  • The false grip is essential for smooth progression to muscle-ups
  • Do not proceed to dynamic movements until you develop adequate grip strength
  • Your wrists must be healthy and pain-free; stop if discomfort occurs

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
