Russian Twist

The Russian twist is a rotational core exercise that strengthens the obliques and abdominal muscles. It can be performed with or without additional weight and helps develop core strength and rotational power.
Instructions
- Sit down on the floor placing your feet either under something that will not move or by having a partner hold them.
- Bend your legs at the knees at approximately 45 degrees.
- Elevate your upper body so that it creates an imaginary V-shape with your thighs.
- Your arms should be fully extended in front of you perpendicular to your torso with hands clasped. This is the starting position.
- Twist your torso to the right side until your arms are parallel with the floor while breathing out.
- Hold the contraction for a second and move back to the starting position while breathing in.
- Now move to the opposite left side performing the same technique.
- Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions.
Tips
- This exercise effectively targets the oblique muscles and builds rotational core strength.
- Increasing the distance of your arms from your body increases the difficulty of the movement.
- Adding weight to your chest (medicine ball, dumbbell, or weight plate) increases intensity.
- Keep your feet anchored to allow full rotational range of motion.
- Maintain the elevated chest position throughout to maximize core engagement.
- Controlled movements are more effective than rapid twisting.
- This exercise improves functional rotational strength for sports and daily activities.
Recommended starting values
