Side Swings (Jump Rope)
A jump rope footwork drill where you swing the rope side-to-side without jumping, developing wrist control and shoulder endurance.
Instructions
- Stand with feet hip-width apart, holding the rope handles at your sides with arms bent slightly forward.
- Keep both feet stationary or lightly bounce in place with minimal vertical movement.
- Swing the rope to one side by rotating your wrists and shoulders.
- Control the rope as it passes under the feet at ground level.
- Swing to the opposite side in a continuous pendulum motion.
- Gradually increase speed while maintaining control.
Tips
- Focus on wrist control rather than arm strength for smoother swings.
- Keep your core engaged and maintain upright posture.
- Use a lighter rope if you’re developing coordination.
- This is excellent for warm-ups and active recovery between harder rope sessions.
- Maintain steady breathing throughout the movement.
- Practice both directions equally to develop balanced shoulder stability.
