A unilateral balance exercise performed on one leg on a balance board, developing ankle stability and proprioceptive control.
Instructions
- Place a balance board on a flat, stable surface.
- Stand beside the board with one foot ready to step on it.
- Step onto the balance board with one foot, centering your weight.
- Lift your other leg by bending the knee, holding it in front of your body.
- Engage your core and maintain an upright posture.
- Focus your gaze on a fixed point ahead to aid balance.
- Hold this single-leg balance position for the desired duration.
- Step down with control and repeat on the opposite leg.
Tips
- Have a wall or stable surface nearby for safety during the initial progression.
- Keep your standing knee slightly bent to allow for small stabilizing movements.
- The lifted leg acts as a counterbalance; adjust its height as needed for stability.
- This exercise significantly challenges ankle and proprioceptive stability.
- Increase difficulty by closing your eyes or performing arm movements while balanced.
- Perform 2-3 sets of 20-45 second holds on each leg for balanced development.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
