Sumo Deadlift (Cable)
A sumo stance deadlift using cable resistance with feet positioned wide and toes pointed outward. Emphasizes glute and inner thigh engagement while reducing lower back strain.
Instructions
- Stand in front of a cable machine with the pulley at ankle to knee height.
- Position your feet wider than shoulder-width apart with toes pointed outward at 45 degrees.
- Grab the handle with both hands between your legs, arms extended.
- Keep your chest up and core engaged as you lower into the starting position.
- Drive through your heels and extend your hips and knees to lift the weight.
- Stand upright at the top with full hip extension.
- Return to the starting position with controlled movement.
Tips
- The wide stance emphasizes the glutes and inner thighs more than conventional deadlifts.
- Keep your chest up and avoid excessive forward lean.
- Drive through your heels rather than your toes for optimal glute engagement.
- The constant cable tension provides stimulus throughout the entire range of motion.
- Maintain a neutral spine throughout to protect your lower back.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
