Secondary Muscles
A fundamental kettlebell exercise using explosive hip hinge movement to propel the kettlebell upward, building posterior chain power and conditioning.
Instructions
- Place a kettlebell on the ground between your feet, positioned slightly in front.
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent.
- Hinge at your hips and grasp the kettlebell handle with both hands or one hand.
- Load your posterior chain by pushing your hips back slightly while maintaining a neutral spine.
- Explosively extend your hips and knees, driving your body upward powerfully.
- The explosive hip extension propels the kettlebell upward to approximately chest or shoulder height.
- Allow the kettlebell to swing downward as you hinge your hips again, loading the posterior chain.
- Reverse direction as the kettlebell swings back, immediately beginning the next hip extension.
- Continue for the desired number of repetitions in a rhythmic, continuous motion.
Tips
- The kettlebell swing is a posterior chain dominant movement; power comes from your hips, not your arms.
- Maintain a neutral spine throughout; avoid excessive spinal flexion or extension.
- The movement is driven by explosive hip extension, not arm strength.
- Perform the movement in a rhythmic, continuous pattern; momentum should carry the kettlebell.
- Keep the kettlebell close to your body throughout the movement.
- Breathe in during the hinge phase and exhale during the explosive hip extension.
- This fundamental movement develops posterior chain power, explosive strength, and cardiovascular conditioning.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
