A floor-based core exercise where the torso rotates side to side with legs extended, effectively targeting the obliques and abdominal muscles.

Instructions

  1. Lie on your back on a mat with your arms extended out to the sides at shoulder height, palms facing down.
  2. Raise your legs until they are nearly perpendicular to the floor or at a 90-degree angle at your hips.
  3. Keep your legs relatively straight or slightly bent at the knees.
  4. Rotate your core to swing both legs to the right side, bringing them as close to the floor as possible without touching.
  5. Use your obliques to control the movement and swing your legs back to center and then to the left side.
  6. Continue alternating side to side in a controlled, smooth motion.
  7. Complete the prescribed number of repetitions.

Tips

  • Keep your shoulders and head in contact with the floor throughout the movement to maintain proper form.
  • This exercise heavily emphasizes the obliques; expect significant core activation.
  • Control the descent on each side rather than using momentum or falling.
  • Start with bent knees to reduce the difficulty if needed.
  • Perform this movement slowly and controlled for maximum core engagement.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
