Back Extension (Barbell)
A back extension exercise performed with barbell loading that develops lower back and glute strength. Effective for posterior chain development and injury prevention.
Instructions
- Position yourself in a back extension machine or Roman chair with your torso extended beyond the support pad.
- Place a barbell across your upper back and shoulders, holding it securely.
- Keep your legs straight and firmly secured under the leg pads.
- Engage your core and lower your torso forward at the hips.
- Lower until your torso is nearly parallel to the ground or until you feel a stretch in your hamstrings.
- Drive through your hips and glutes to extend your torso back to the starting position.
- Repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.
Tips
- This exercise places significant load on the lower back, so proper form is essential.
- Keep your spine in a neutral position throughout the movement; avoid excessive rounding.
- Focus on using your glutes and lower back to drive the movement.
- Start with minimal weight and progress slowly as strength develops.
- This is an excellent complement to squats and deadlifts for posterior chain balance.
