Good Morning Squat (Barbell)
A hybrid movement combining a good morning with a squat to emphasize posterior chain strength and hip mobility.
Instructions
- Hold the barbell across your shoulders with feet shoulder-width apart.
- Simultaneously bend at the hips and knees, hinging at the waist while lowering into a squat.
- Lower until your torso is nearly parallel to the ground and thighs are parallel to the floor.
- Drive through your heels and extend your hips and knees simultaneously to return to standing.
- Repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.
Tips
- Keep your back straight throughout the movement to prevent lower back strain
- This hybrid emphasizes the posterior chain more than a standard squat
- Start with light weight to master the combined movement pattern
- Engage your core and maintain a neutral spine throughout
- The good morning component increases lower back and hamstring engagement
- Focus on hinging from the hips while simultaneously bending the knees
