A machine-based deadlift that uses leverage mechanics to reduce lower back strain while targeting the posterior chain including glutes, hamstrings, and erector spinae.
Instructions
- Load the machine pins with an appropriate weight and position yourself directly between the handles.
- Grasp the bottom handles with a comfortable grip, either overhand or neutral depending on machine design.
- Lower your hips and take a breath, positioning your body at the starting position with your weight in your heels.
- Look straight ahead or slightly upward to maintain a neutral spine.
- Keep your chest up and engage your core muscles for stability and safety.
- Extend through your hips and knees simultaneously, driving the weight upward using your posterior chain.
- Stand to full extension at the top, driving your hips forward without hyperextending your lower back.
- Lower the weight back down under control to the starting position.
Tips
- Start with your hips higher than they would be with a barbell to reduce lower back strain
- Drive through your heels rather than your toes throughout the movement
- Keep the weight close to your body throughout the movement
- Maintain a neutral spine; avoid rounding your lower back
- The machine guides prevent excessive forward/backward movement
- Keep your chest up and shoulders back throughout the lift
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
