Deadlift Single-Leg (Dumbbell)
A unilateral hip-hinge movement using dumbbells that develops single-leg strength, balance, and addresses strength imbalances while emphasizing hamstring and glute development.
Instructions
- Stand upright holding dumbbells in both hands at your sides (or one dumbbell in the hand opposite to your standing leg).
- Maintain a slight bend in your standing leg’s knee throughout the movement.
- Hinge at the hip while extending your non-standing leg backward for balance.
- Lower the dumbbells along your standing leg, keeping them close to your body.
- Continue until you feel a stretch in your hamstring, maintaining a neutral spine.
- Drive through your heel and extend your hip to return to the starting position.
- Complete all repetitions on one leg, then repeat on the opposite side.
Tips
- Maintain balance by keeping your non-standing leg extended backward as a counterweight.
- Keep your spine neutral; avoid rounding your lower back.
- Feel the stretch in your hamstring at the bottom of the movement.
- Use moderate weight and focus on balance and control rather than heavy loading.
- Single-leg training improves stability and addresses strength imbalances.
- This exercise significantly challenges your balance and core stability.
- Gradually increase dumbbell weight as your balance and strength improve.
Recommended starting values
