Romanian Deadlift Single-Leg (Dumbbell)
A unilateral hip-hinge variation using dumbbells that emphasizes single-leg stability, hamstring development, and core control.
Instructions
- Stand upright holding dumbbells in both hands or one dumbbell in the opposite hand of your standing leg.
- Maintain a slight bend in your standing leg’s knee; this bend should remain constant.
- Hinge at the hip while extending your non-standing leg backward for balance and counterweight.
- Lower the dumbbells along your standing leg, keeping them close to your body.
- Continue until you feel a stretch in your hamstring, maintaining a neutral spine.
- Drive through your heel and extend your hip to return to the starting position.
- Complete all repetitions on one leg, then repeat on the opposite side.
Tips
- Maintain balance by extending your non-standing leg backward as a counterweight.
- Keep your lower back neutral and engaged throughout the movement.
- Perform the movement slowly and controlled to maximize hamstring activation.
- Feel the stretch in your hamstring at the bottom position.
- Use moderate weight and focus on balance and stability.
- Single-leg training develops unilateral strength and addresses imbalances.
- This exercise challenges your balance, stability, and core control significantly.
- Gradually progress to heavier dumbbells as your balance and strength improve.
Recommended starting values
