Secondary Muscles
An intermediate isolation exercise for the chest performed on a dedicated machine, emphasizing chest contraction and inner pec development.
Instructions
- Sit on the machine with your back flat against the pad and select your desired weight.
- Adjust the machine so your upper arms are positioned parallel to the floor; adjust seat height as needed.
- Take hold of the handles with both hands using a neutral grip.
- Position your elbows at approximately shoulder height with your arms bent slightly; this is your starting position.
- As you exhale, slowly push the handles together toward the center of your body.
- Squeeze your chest muscles in the middle of the movement, bringing the handles as close together as possible.
- Hold the contracted position for a second while maintaining peak chest contraction.
- As you inhale, slowly return the handles to the starting position in a controlled manner.
- Move through a full range of motion until your chest muscles are fully stretched at the starting position.
- Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions.
Tips
- Adjust the machine so your upper arms are truly parallel to the floor for optimal chest activation.
- Move slowly and deliberately; avoid jerking or using momentum, which reduces chest engagement.
- The machine design isolates the chest by eliminating stabilizer muscle involvement.
- Focus on the contraction at the top of the movement; hold briefly to maximize chest muscle engagement.
- Lower the handles with control; the eccentric (returning) phase is crucial for chest muscle development.
- This machine is excellent for warm-ups before compound pressing exercises or for chest isolation work.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
