Primary Muscles

An advanced calisthenics static hold on rings where the body is horizontal and face-up, perpendicular to the ground, requiring exceptional back and shoulder strength.

Instructions

  1. Begin hanging from the rings with a firm grip and shoulders packed.
  2. Gradually shift your weight backward, allowing your body to rotate toward a face-up horizontal position.
  3. As you rotate, keep your chest high and maintain constant tension throughout your body.
  4. Progress toward a position where your body is parallel to the ground and facing upward.
  5. Maintain this horizontal position by pressing through the rings and keeping your shoulders engaged.
  6. Hold for time while breathing steadily and maintaining core tension.
  7. Return to vertical by rotating forward toward the hanging position.

Tips

  • This is an elite movement requiring extensive preparation and progression
  • Work through lever progressions over many months or years before achieving this
  • Use easier variations (tucked back lever, straps, arched positions) before attempting full holds
  • Your shoulders must be exceptionally strong and mobile; shoulder pain indicates insufficient preparation
  • Keep your shoulders protracted (forward) and engaged throughout the hold
  • This requires exceptional lat and chest strength along with shoulder stability
  • Practice 1-2 times per week maximum due to the extreme intensity
  • Your entire body must be rigid; avoid sagging at the hips or excessive arching
  • Consider seeking coaching from an experienced gymnastics coach for progression
  • Many athletes train for 2+ years before achieving a stable back lever hold

Recommended starting values
