Secondary Muscles
A horizontal pulling variation where you row side to side in a typewriter motion. Typically performed at an incline, building horizontal pulling strength and unilateral back development.
Instructions
- Set the rings at an appropriate height and assume a horizontal body position facing the rings.
- Grip the rings and pull your chest toward one ring in a rowing motion.
- Lower yourself back toward the starting position slightly.
- Shift laterally and row your chest toward the opposite ring.
- Continue alternating sides in a controlled typewriter pattern.
- Maintain a straight body line throughout the movement.
- Complete all prescribed repetitions.
Tips
- Adjust ring height to match your current strength level.
- Keep your body straight—avoid hip sag or rotation.
- This movement builds unilateral pulling strength effectively.
- Control the lateral movement for proper muscle engagement.
- Focus on pulling with your back rather than purely with your arms.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
